Lost Dutchman State Park – Review

Milestone 11/22/20: 3 Months on our journey!

When we left the Sedona area we were a bit down, because we loved being there so much, but then we hated leaving most everywhere we have been!  At Lost Dutchman we loved the campground/campsite (#27)!

The campsites are spread out so you are not looking onto another site and most sites have a clear view of the Superstition Mountains.  At our specific site we had a clear shot of the mountains and had cocktails every night to watch the spectacular changes during the sunset.  We also were dazzled by the wildlife!  We were graced every morning and most afternoons with a covey of Gambel’s quail as well as Gila Woodpeckers and Hummingbirds!  The quail are native to the Sonoran desert and they are fascinating to watch as there are usually at least 10-15 in a covey (aka flock) as they scurry from one location to the next.  The woodpeckers are also native to this specific area, nesting in the giant Saguaro Cacti.

There are many hikes for all activity levels.  We completed a moderate loop hike that gave us a good grasp of the vast mountains.  The area is also near the Tonto National Forest that has wild horses as well as lakes and rivers.  Lost Dutchman State Park is about 30 miles East of Phoenix…We highly recommend!

Our only disappointment, the state park is a “no drone” zone.

See Gallery, Arizona, Lost Dutchman as well as the Wildlife Gallery!
