Soon after we arrived in Borrego Springs we heard about the “sculptures”. There are well over 100 life size or larger metal sculptures throughout the desert surrounding the town. We felt like we were on safari, hunting every one of them! We spent 2 days, 3-4 hours each day and we went to every single one!
The collection includes camels, sloths, llamas, wild horses, sabre tooth tigers, mammoths, giant birds, wild pigs, sheep, tortoises and the famous dragon as well as many more!
This all began in 2006 when the owner of the Galleta Meadows Estate, Dennis Avery, decided he really wanted to add a bunch of free-standing art pieces to his massive property (the property is on both sides of the town for miles). He enlisted the help of Ricardo Breceda, who began crafting these amazing sculptures, and they started to pop up around the desert. Mr. Breceda often claims that he is done creating the sculptures, but then another one pops up in the barren landscape, and the speculation continues.
Since the surrounding landscape is so barren, it is easy to see them while you are driving. Some are right off the road while others are off in the distance, but most have at least some sort of dirt road to get to them.
Here is a drone video to peak your interest but to see all of the sculptures go to our Photo Gallery, choose California, then Borrego Sculptures.
