We spent 5 days in the Brunswick GA area with friends, Gene and Don. We visited Fort Frederica National Monument, St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island; such a fun trip!
Fort Frederica
Three years after founding Georgia in 1733, Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe established Fort Frederica to defend the colony against Spanish attack from Florida. In time, long after the British garrison had left and the original townspeople abandoned Frederica. At it’s peak the Fort was a self contained town like a planned community with streets and avenues! Today in this national monument you can walk along the “streets” where the foundations of buildings still exist.
St. Simons Island
St. Simons is an island off the Georgia coast. It’s known for its salt marshes, sandy stretches like East Beach and a cargo ship carrying several thousand cars that went aground a few years ago. The ship is being sliced into pieces to be removed….quite a sight!
Blythe Regional Park Campground
This regional park is hidden off the road and wooded with palmettos and lots of Spanish Moss (not Spanish and not moss). The site was large with many gnats and visitors after dark! One night we had an armadillo and opossum….the next night a feral cat!
Travel Update
We are now back in Richmond for a couple of appointments and to get everything settled for another 6 months on the road. We are departing Richmond on Thursday heading to Tennessee and Southern Kentucky to Mammoth Cave National Park. We are so excited to get back on the road wandering our great country!
