After Grand Teton National Park we returned to our Airstream for the night. We then headed to Yellowstone National Park. From our home base of Ashton, ID we had about an hour drive to Yellowstone.
Yellowstone was established as the world’s first national park in 1872! This park influenced the creation of the National Park Service in 1916. The park is 3500 sq. miles of wilderness atop a volcanic hot spot. The park features canyons, alpine rivers, forests, hot springs and geysers. The most famous geyser, Old Faithful that got it’s name because it blows approx. every 90 minutes and erupts to a height of up to 185’!
We were fortunate to get a reservation at Old Faithful Inn. The inn is on the national historic register, designed by Robert Reamer and was built 1903-1904. The inn has been very well maintained to keep it’s original feel.
Much of the park has boardwalks to get up close and personal with the springs, pools and small geysers. We walked about 6 miles of boardwalks and saw over a hundred features. Beyond the volcanic features there are towering waterfalls, wildlife and deep canyons.
Yellowstone is a very special national treasure. We hope to return. Note: The Oregon Fires created a smoky haze and affected our photo/video experience. The fires, drought and climate issues in the west are a real thing….
Travel Update: We are now in Colorado. We made a stop in Steamboat Springs to visit with Alan, a high school friend…great time and visit! We are heading to Grand Lake today!
