Monument Valley Tribal Park!

Since we left Richmond August of 2020, we have been to Monument Valley or close to it several times.  The tribal park has been closed for a year and a half due to Covid.  Only just recently has the Navajo Nation opened up for tours!

The drive up to Monument Valley from Camp Verde, AZ is about 3.5 hours.  We left the campground at 6:30am and witnessed an unbelievable sunrise from the road.  Our route passed Sedona, Flagstaff and the road that leads to the Grand Canyon.  We made reservations at “The View, Cabins” that sit on Navajo Tribal Park land.  The cabins were very nice with refrigerator, microwave but most of all the view was “stunning”!

Tribal Park Monument Valley, a red-sand desert region on the Arizona-Utah border, is known for the towering sandstone buttes, some over 1000’ tall.  The park, frequently a filming location for Western movies, is accessed by the looping, 17-mile Valley Drive. The famous, steeply sloped Mittens buttes can be viewed from the road or from overlooks such as John Ford’s Point.

We took a sunset tour with a Navajo guide and the tour took us to many places that can be only be accessed with an escort.  There were several arches, archeological areas along with a visit to a “hogan” (a structure made of stacked logs and mud) where we learned about Navajo rug making and actually watched the yarn being made from raw sheep’s wool.  For more information about Navajo Hogans:  http://navajopeople.org/blog/navajo-homes-hogans/

Our guide also played some traditional music and told us some history about her life and the lives of the Navajo people.  The entire tour was very enjoyable and we were the only ones on the tour which made it even better!

The overnight to Monument Valley was very special!

Enjoy the show!
