Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, previously known as Villa Vizcaya, is one of the top destinations in Miami. This villa was built from 1914 to 1922 and was originally the winter home of James Deering, of Deering Harvester Company, and later International Harvester.
Vizcaya is located on the shores of Biscayne Bay and is surrounded by native forests in Coconut Grove. To say it’s “Fabulous” is an understatement! This European-inspired estate is an exquisite blend of elaborate landscaping and brilliant architecture. The stone Barge was built in 1916 and served as a breakwater to protect the estate from storms. It was a work of art featuring prominent sculptures and was used as a leisure space to entertain James Deering’s guests. The heart and main living area is the Courtyard, which was originally open to the sky. What a wonderful space! Several reception rooms, the Library, Music Room and the Dining Room surround the Courtyard.
James Deering and his partner Paul Chalfin scoured Europe for the finest furnishings, antiques and paintings. They imported gilded panels, carved mantels and fresco ceilings from Tuscany and France. Unlike other house museums from this era, Vizcaya still possesses almost all of its original furnishings.
The Gardens, the European-inspired gardens were designed by landscape architect Diego Suarez. The overall landscape design is conceived as a series of rooms with an abundance of architectural structures, fountains and sculptures. The Florida fossil reef limestone throughout the property is amazing!
Next Stop: Key Biscayne & Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. Just minutes from downtown Miami on the tip of Key Biscayne, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park offers visitors breathtaking views of the Atlantic and the Cape Florida lighthouse, the oldest standing structure in Greater Miami.
After a spectacular day at Vizcaya and Key Biscayne we were ready to hit South Beach!
South Beach is a world-famous destination known for its nightlife, and eclectic vibe. As you can see… we had a lot of fun in South Beach South Beach Day / Beach & Bike Ride The South Beach Art Deco District is awesome! There are so many bright and pastel colors, as well as geometric lines and curves. Having reached the height of its popularity in the late 1920’s to 40’s, the style still brings in glamor and luxury to South Beach. We just hit a couple highlights, we are definitely coming back to Miami!
