Kayaking Horseshoe Bend

In 2014 Carol and I rafted 8 days and 277 miles of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.  We fell in love with the Grand Canyon and the Southwest.  It sounds absurd, maybe, but the raft trip changed our lives.  It changed us because we now seek out adventure and we are not fearful!

Most all adventures on the Colorado below Glen Canyon Dam start at Lee’s Ferry just upriver from the Navajo Bridge.  Both of our adventures have started at Lee’s Ferry.

When we arrived, 2 hours early, we had a rush of memories of our 8 day raft trip with Arizona River Runners.  The big rafts were there and new adventures for so many were about to begin.

Our adventure was different this time on the Colorado.  Instead of rafting we were kayaking and we were being shuttled upriver to just above Horseshoe Bend to paddle back to Lee’s Ferry, approx. 10 miles.  Our shuttle operator was “Kayak Horseshoe Bend” and they rent the kayaks and take you by pontoon as far up river as you want.  Our shuttle had 3 couples and each were being dropped off at a different spot.  We did ride all the way to Glen Canyon Dam and then rode back and got dropped off just above Horseshoe Bend to start our adventure.

At the drop-off point there was also very well preserved Petroglyphs!  We are adventurous but we did have some nerves about the unknown…rapids (there were just some ripples), 10 miles being too far and of course screwing up and tipping over in 46 degree water!  Within 5 minutes on the water all our nerves calmed down.  We had a great day, the colors were amazing on the high canyon walls and the water was so clear you could see an enormous amount of Rainbow Trout!  There were also wild horses, awesome! We finished the trip in about 3.5 hours.

I can’t say enough good things about this day….enjoy our video!
