Just outside of Escalante UT there is a road that is 58 miles long that makes it’s way to the Northwest side of Lake Powell; Hole in the Rock. The road is a dirt road with the last 10 miles consisting of a true 4WD experience! The trek took us past some amazing sights. Chimney Rock, Dance Hall Rock and several slot canyon hikes….but our mission was to get to the end and see the famous “Hole in the Rock”.
Hole in the Rock is on the National Register of Historic Places. In short, this was the passage of Mormon Settlers to cross the Colorado River! It is a daunting thought that wagons filled with people and supplies could navigate through this “hole in the rock”. For more history, see link below.

We stopped at Chimney Rock for lunch and also Dance Hall Rock. The road was long and slow. The entire trek took us about 4.5 hours to travel 58 miles! Once we got there the reality of our trip set in….we were ALONE! The last 7 miles we did not pass or see anyone! The good thing, we got the only campsite. Once settled and camp was set up, we went to hike the “hole”. We got to the entrance and it was insanely steep and in our opinion DANGEROUS! We instead hiked to the top of the adjacent rock walls. It was HOT. We returned to our temporary home and had cocktails, chips and salsa….and just soaked in the unbelievable beauty. Along the ridge in the distance we could see rain storm clouds and just prayed that the system would pass by us; we were spared.
We were so surprised that there was not one sound…Hole in the Rock is the most quiet place I have ever been. Not one sound…no crickets, birds chirping, just complete silence.
Once the sun went down we were beat and climbed in our tent…it was still warm so we left the flaps open….a little breeze made the flap move and I FREAKED out….thought I heard someone walking! Once I knew the flap was the intruder, my fear settled down. At some point, the moonrise lit up the desert! We both could look out the tent and watch the stars….incredible! We awoke about 6am unharmed and without issue!
Our next chore was to take pictures in the incredible early morning light. Carol hiked to the top of the stone wall and I flew the drone.
We made coffee and breakfast of oatmeal on the tiny camp stove and then packed up for the 4+ hour drive out. At this point we still had not seen anyone!
This was a backcountry trip we will never forget! P.S. Yes the truck survived without any sign of distress and lived up to it’s title of “Super Duty”!
Such a dramatic area, wow, and so empty of people. Loved the drone shots! And the history, very cool.
It was such a special experience! To be totally void of people!
Loved your video. You are camping in our “old” back yard. Brenda and I are from Utah but live in Rehoboth Beach now. It was fun seeing all the Utah sights again … love the drone affect. Thank you for sharing.
We love Utah! We loved this adventure to Hole in the Rock, hard to believe it is over!
One of the best videos yet!! Narration, great shots, and history. You guys are gutsy, that’s for sure. Thanks for sharing this grand adventure.
Thanks! It was a real adventure! We can’t believe it is over and now just a memory!
Just incredible C and C! Great editing, (even though it made you kind of seasick making it you said’) , I sure get that!! 😜 And I like the pics from inside the truck, makes it look like you were flying!! 😳
Good music also! Another 5 stars gals! Keep taking us all along on your adventures!❤
Becky on Marci’s phone, T
(THIS took some editing also!( 🥺😝
It was so fun…including making the video! It was a real adventure!
Another neat video- and camping on the ground too. Need to get a truck bed tent , its easy to set up and off the ground so you feel more secure in the bed and if something happens you just jump in the truck and drive off. well seeing you all have fun is great and I look forward to more ….Camp ONNNN and ONNN
Fortunately the tent is an easy set-up! We are hauling so much in the back there is no way to sleep in it.. ha!
