The Slot is a narrow siltstone slot canyon near Borrego Springs, CA in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.  We went to do this hike on New Years Day but the crowds were unmanageable.  We returned early one morning and we were the 2nd car in the lot!  There is a 3 mile dirt access road to get the The Slot.   We hiked counter clockwise that forced us up a deep sand road...it was daunting from the bottom looking up, but once we got to the top, it didn’t seem that bad....   The actual slot canyon is about a…

Palm Canyon Trail

Milestone: We have been on the road for 4 months!Borrego Springs is located in the center of the Anza-Borrego State Park.  One of the most popular hikes is Palm Canyon. The hike takes you to the 3rd largest native palm grove in the state of California.  We were fortunate to be able to experience this hike and special palm oasis.  This palm grove had a devastating fire and the palm canopy was destroyed all that remained were tall black charred sticks.  Due to the fire the hike had been closed until last month when miraculously the palm canopy grew back…

Lake Havasu Area, AZ

Buckskin Mountain State Park, Bill Williams River Wildlife Refuge and Lake Havasu City! Our last stop in Arizona was Buckskin Mountain State Park about 20 miles South of Lake Havasu City.  Buckskin Mountain SP sits on the Colorado River and it is a very different river than what flows through the Grand Canyon!  The river is flat with zero rapids! The state park is small, but we really enjoyed it; given we felt we had the best site in the park! Organ Pipe National Monument

Over the last 2 days we have been at Organ Pipe National Monument.  The feature picture is an organ pipe cactus.  The park is located just 5 miles from the Mexican boarder.  The campground is very nice but no hookups.  That is fine for us, we are self contained and have solar panels to keep our batteries charged.   Yesterday we hiked the Victorian Mine Trail a 4.9 mile hike through the Sonoran Desert with an abandoned silver mine at the 2.5 miles in. Our highlight of wildlife, a javelina walked through our campsite and our trail camera captured it!…
