The Caminito del Rey, or “The King’s Little Pathway,” was originally built between 1901 and 1905 to provide access for workers maintaining the nearby hydroelectric plants. Its name came after King Alfonso XIII walked the path in 1921 during the inauguration of the dam.
Over the decades, the narrow concrete walkway fell into disrepair, and with sheer cliffs dropping over 100 meters and missing railings, it gained a deadly reputation—claiming several lives and being closed in 2000.
After a major renovation, Caminito del Rey reopened in 2015 as a safe and regulated hiking route. Today, it offers thrill-seekers and nature lovers a once-in-a-lifetime walk along towering limestone walls, complete with glass-floor lookouts and a suspension bridge hanging high above the Guadalhorce River.
