Ouray, Colorado Jeep Tour! Wow!

This week we treated ourselves to a cabin in Ouray, Colorado and a private Jeep Tour with Alpine Scenic 4×4 Tours. Our guide’s name was Sam and we asked that he take us to as many scenic places as he could for our 6 hour tour.

We were so excited and had been looking forward to this adventure for a few weeks!

Our tour started on Highway 550 through a section of the Million Dollar Highway. After our first stop at Bear Creek Falls, we turned off the Million Dollar Highway heading to Red Mountain #2 via Corkscrew Pass. We rode through stunning vistas as the dirt road twisted and turned up the pass where we captured the Red Mountains at 12,300 feet with the drone!

The San Juan Mountains are undoubtedly the most colorful mountains in Colorado. Mineral deposits have created slopes that are red, orange, yellow, purple, silver and brown. These colors combined with the blues skies produce a dazzling kaleidoscope. The Red Mountains consist of 3 mountains #1 (12,592’), #2 (12,219’), and #3 (12,890’).

This area is also rich in mining history. In a period of less than 25 years, more than $30 million of silver, lead, zinc, copper and gold were mined along the Red Mountain Divide.

We visited Hurricane Pass at 12,730’ with awesome views of Poughkeepsie Gulch and Lake Como. The next stop was California Pass at 13,000’!

After many stunning stops and views of alpine lakes our tour concluded at Gray Cooper Gulch with an alpine lake (tarn) with beautiful reflections in the mirror like water.

We highly recommend this tour and our guide Sam.

Enjoy the video!

Wow! What beauty!!! The colors of the mountains are awesome. We had stopped in Ouray on the way to Telluride one year and a hike we took at Lizzard Head looked similar. Looked like a Georgia O’Keefe painting to me. Did you see the dog Dexter in Ouray by chance? CBS Sunday Morning did a piece of him a couple of weeks ago. He only has his two back legs and walks all over the place! He’s pretty famous in Ouray and on the internet! Parts of that road looked pretty precarious! What an awesome excursion! Good for you guys!
