Oklahoma! Natural Falls State Park

We arrived in Oklahoma today and were pleasantly surprised to see the sun!  We are at Natural Falls State Park for one night.  This is a small park but the falls are very special.

The park has quite a history, dating back to the 1830s when the region was designated as the Cherokee Nation during the Indian Removal Act of 1830 (also known as the Trail of Tears, when the Cherokee were forced to relocate to the west). When the Civil War started, the tribe became divided and non-Indians began moving into the area illegally. In fact, this section of the Ozarks was a known hideout for bands of outlaws that raided the area and those traveling through it. The activities in the area are thought to have been the inspiration for movies such as True Grit and Hang ‘Em High .
